No no no - it's football (NFL), girly football, and then whatever Australian rules football is.
No there's shitty football (NFL), skillful football (Everywhere in the world other than USA football) and a proper game with a ball but not called football (Rugby)

Out of interest, can any of the Americans on the site say why the game they call football is actually called football?
The UK one is quite easy - it involves 99% kicking a ball with your feet.

must agree with meathead.
how can you call that american crap football. they wear 6 inches of padding for gods sake. soccer aka premier league is just filled with pansies. i dont mind watching soccer games over here because they would rather fight the guy that tackles them rather than roll around for five minutes.
there are two codes of footy in australia. one is based in melbourne the other in sydney.
Aussie rules is from melbourne. this game is actually quite crazy as there are bugger all rules. fights are simply disapproved of. in one grand final as soon as the national anthem finished one team started laying into the other. lets just say the game was very clean and the crowd was peaceful.
One of the teams - West Coast Eagles - was of high respect. half the players had multiple underworld connections and known to be on various chemicals, including horse tranqs. they started cracking down after various bad publicity events - interactions with the police, being seen on the sites/with prime suspects of murders minutes before the murder took place.
Rugby league is the other one, primarily in sydney and its the same as englands super league but our players are bigger more solid and not as flighty so the tackling is much more solid and the game is more enjoyable.
but yeh in official laymans terms there is no football in australia. Aussie rules and league are reffered to as footy, soccer as soccer.

Kickoffs and field goals! In all honesty I'm not sure, and don't really care. I like both american football and english football, so my comments before were facetious... I tend to think that the american vs rest of the world football arguement is all a big joke, because surely people are aware that it's just a cultural thing, and that neither sport is inherently easier than the other... just different?
