i can only assume if something has no colour or shade, it can't be somethnig "real" , as everything has a colour or shade.
i could be completly wrong but is it your imagination or conscience?

this must be a play on words? no colour could also mean no additional colour..? no shade could mean no shade as in no shelter from the sun?
