Most clubs play electronically synthesized music all night. Music like RnB can be electronically synthesized music.

According to that definition the RnB club in (insert town centre) is a rave. It most certainly isn't.

Fail basically.

ok, define rave...

haha fair call mate.
still trying to work out who your taking the piss out of =P

Could apply to either of us here. :D It certainly applies to me 90% of the time.

Right, I'll get anal on your arse then (I'll also give a detailed description).

A rave is free for anyone to attend for starters. They're unlicensed (and usually illegal). You can leave and come back as you see fit. You can do what you want there as long as it doesn't effect other ravers negatively (or the police have turned up). Mainly underground dance music will be played. A rave has no official start/end time. Most of the time the police will shut down raves at any opportunity they can (see the criminal justice and public order act 1994). You would get lynched if you put cheesy, commercial clubland tunes on at a rave.

Even things like Slammin and Helter Skelter aren't proper raves (Helter Skelter was a proper rave back in the day before going "legit"). they're often refered to as a "legal rave". A legal rave is not a proper rave. If a legal rave promoter puts a night on in a club it's just a club night.

The words "rave" and "raver" get thrown around a lot but they're nearly always used out of context. You're not a "raver" because you listen to a certain type of music and it's not a "rave" just because it's a party that lasts all night playnig electronic music.

all that that u typed mate is raves 20 years or so ago. clubland and 2days hardcore events is moden day raves. music evolves, so do raves

Of course it's ****ing not mate :-/ I go to rave like this all the time. Theres a couple of pictures on my myspaz of me and some mates at a rave in a tunnel from a month or two ago. Legal raves have never been real raves and never will be. Clubland tour has absolutely bugger all too do with raves whatsoever.

Just beacause you don't go to proper raves and don't hear about them doesn't mean they don't go on. Just means you had kids, got old and lost touch. ;p (I know, I'm only a few years younger :().

Bottom line is, a licenced party in a club/stadium/etc is not/can not/never will be a rave.

*edit*

Here we go:-

Picture I took at a real rave on 11.10.08. That's certainly not 20 years ago mate. :P

What Bulby wrote sounds pretty spot on to me mate.

@ Lilley: not taking the piss out of anybody mate, just saying it's not quite as black and white as in a dictionary ;)

ok, i'll pay that.

few things i would put in there.

can be in a hall or auditorium. i would also be willing to pay entrance fee to cover hiring of hall/dj's/equiptment. reason for this - power points. however, i would love to have an outdoor rave.

dont see any reason why its exclusive to underground dance music. would have no problems with clubland at a rave - that one was included by personal bias methinks ;)

at your raves, do you have dj's mixing or just play recorded sets?

It's normally a DJ playing but I've seen Live PA's and even DnB bands play. Never seen anyone just slap a recorded mix on. :-/ That would be a bit shit.

It tends to mainly be Underground Dance played at raves, is not a personal Bias. ;) It is fairly common to get a random Dub/Reggae/Scar set late morning/afternoon sorta time. Music you hear tends to be Techno (Mainly Hard/Acid/London), Hardtek, harder side of Hard Trance/House, Hardstyle, Dirty/Electro House (again the harder, underground side of things), Psy Trance, Gabber, Breaks, Jungle/DnB odd bit of Freeform, Oldskool Hardcore/Hardcore Breaks. Other stuff does get played but it's vary rare for it to stray away fom all this sort of stuff.

You barely ever here anything even remotely cheesy. If you do it will be a random 80's pop tune thrown into a set for random comical value. In the 10 years I've been going to raves in the UK I've never heard anything like you would get at the Clubland Tour and I suspect I never will. The Dj would get a slap if he played the latest Cascada single :P

Nearest place you might have heard of is High Wycombe in Bucks. Not far from there, out into the country a bit. Wont go into too much detail for obious reasons. ;) You live near or is that miles from you?
