What is the best place to store music on a PC. I'm currently using Windows Media Player 10 as i like the set-up. I like to have Artist, Track, Label, Date of release etc all in one view which is possible with WMP10. Is there anything better or shall i stick with what i have. I have a lot of music stored (750gb) so it needs to be able to handle it all.

personally, i dont like music library programs...i just have a folder called

Music

and in that folder 3 folders

CDS
Single Mp3s
Mixes

then in single Mp3's... just folders of genres

Chart
Chillout
Classical
Christmas
Dance (1996-)
Dance (1996+)
Hard House
Hardcore
(with sub folders: Freeform, Makina, NS Breakbeat, OS Breakbeat, NS Gabber, OS Gabber, NS Happy, OS Happy)
Hardstyle
House
Rock
(with sub folders, Acoustic and Chilled, Alternative and Chart, Decades, Indie and Britpop, Pop Punk, Punk and Ska, Thrash and Heavy)
Soundtracks
Trance
(with sub folders: '02-, '02+, Cheesy, Hard, Prog, Psy)
Urban Sounds
(with sub folders: Big Beat, DnB, Funk, Garage, Hip Hop, Jungle, Reggae, RnB)
Worldwide

though the "single mp3's" folder for hardcore doesnt have much in it...as all my hardcore is off my cds and are in the "CDs > Hardcore" folder

i dont like ID3 tags see..and .i like things to be organised on my hard drive...by file name, folder

I use SongBird, its a bit slow sometimes, but mostly works well. I used to use iTunes and imported my collection that was mostly recorded with it. It didnt properly display from the tag Ä and Ö for some odd reason. But all in all, so far the best one ive used.

Looks like that (theres a load more columns, i just display the ones i need):

I have Artist name -> Album. Compilations are on a Compilations Folder. iTunes used to sort them that way and it works.

On the hard drive. I find leaving CD's on top of the tower an inconvenience.

well first i would partition that drive for your music
for one, if windows ****s up and you need to reinstall then you got it all, and two.. it will leave all the songs in its own place

i use winamp pro, but like if they are not tagged right then the
i havnt got to try "foobar2000" yet but i was told its good

so like the partition the drive just for music is good
mine is set up like
full=230gig

movies=32gig
music=32gig
programs=32gigs
hackinstosh/linux=40gig(i think)
main=81gig

i have this side bar that tells me the sizes (a yahoo widget)
it looks like this but the mac partion it not there

To make my life easier, i sort/copy all my music into separate folders so that my software, can find it easily and so i dont have to go looking though itunes all the time

For people not using music library programs, your missing a lot. Except if youre one of those people, that feel like "hmm, today i might listen some Hardcore Tsunami" go grab the disc and play it from start to finish.

I on the other hand skip through various CD's really fast. Sometimes i only remember a part of the song name, but can still find it in seconds. How you list the folders is totally irrelevant into how you actually listen music. As most Library programs let you store them whatever way you want. The only upside is that they use index files that let you quickly go through even large collections.

You remember all the tracklisting from all your compilations? ;)

The benefit is that it sorts your collection in seconds in any way you want. E.g. if i want to listen Marusha, type marusha [enter] and *BAM* get a nice listing of everything i have from her:

Personally i wouldnt ever go back, after using one.
