No, you're train of thought is if that you don't understand it no-one else must.

They date things that are millions of years old by a method called carbon dating, it's to do with the half life of elements.

I'm not gonna explain as on your replies to the thread so far you don't seem to care about education but in living in your own little world. Do some research of your own if you're that interested in escaping your own little microcosm.

Not too long ago on the news they were talking about a group of Christians taking a field trip to a prehistoric museum to disprove that dinosaurs didn't exist. The reporter is like "Well what about the fossils?" and the fat lady says "God put them there to test our faith."

UGH! How can people be so thick? There is a massive amount of evidence to proove that the dinos did exist.

um to be accurate their is no more Ancient Egyptian..they were breed out by the greek and then romans ect and know their is no direct decendate of a true ancient egyptian. well that wat i was told in ancient history.

but yeh i do a bach of science at uni so i dont think it is just made up crap, why do you think they do experiment???, to prove their theory is correct or wrong, silly.

Yep, see Torpex's post for a slightly more informative post than mine LOL. Its a good read!

As for scientists making things up and making pointless uneducated guesses at stuff, perhaps you are mixing up the Beano and New Scientist.

The scientific and engineering world is based around peer reviewed journals and conferences. Basically, one scientist comes up with a theory and writes a paper on that theory. Usually this starts off with a hypothesis (ie I believe this because of that). Then evidence is provided to support the hypothesis. This paper is then either reviewed by a number of experts in the field and if it is found to be a strong argument then the paper will get published. The other option is to present your findings at a conference. Either way, once the paper is in the public domain, if it is a very weak argument then you will get shot down in flames and your paper ripped to shreds.

In short, scientists (and Engineer's) theories are NEVER uneducated - they draw on proven theories and 100s and even 1000s of years of research. The only uneducated theories around here UG are your own I'm afraid to say.

interesting topic. despite the fact that they have pulled complete mammoths - hair and all - out of ice.

@ jenks: im pretty sure 'creationist nut jobs' believe in dino's, they just didnt survive the flood mate. Too big to fit on the ark, dont ya know? But seriously i think creationists miss the point a bit. I would hardly say Genisis 1 is supposed to be taken literally.

@ google: until scientists have solved how the big bang happend and actually get their physics right (re: dark matter = bs - the purpose of dark matter and the aether are v. similar imo) and start editing their theories. Also the distance to the sun is 150 000 000 km. quite verifiable really. Yes it technically is guess work but very accurate guess work.

@ underloop: proven theories... 1000 years research (or even 100)... really? the aether comes to mind. no proof for it they just all felt that it had to be there. no experiment for it either until the M & M experiment, and what happend there? so they spend the next 80-odd years making excuses for the null-result. and it still took them a good 20 years to let go of the aether after Einstein came along.

but honestly, if you believe in dino's then your gona have to believe in the moon landing and 9/11 as well

an entire skeleton that WAS reconstructed to from bones found in the location to form what the scientists believe to be the most plausible shape. mind you the reconstruction is usually done by a computer so im willing to believe the output.

about Carbon Dating: please people! its only (relatively) accurate to 50000 years. the half life of carbon is just too short for any real outputs above this time period. in fact my history teacher is trained in archeology. in Unias a demonstration of carbon dating they killed a fly and then dated it the next day. the fly was 6000 years old apparently.

the main dating for any real result is uranium dating. uranium 238 has a half life of 4.5 bill years and uranium 235 has half life off 700 mill years. However i was reading something a while ago that said scientists are starting to think there is a natural process through which the half life of uranium can decrease by up to about 80%.

Sorry, you misunderstand me. I'm not saying scientists never get it wrong, I'm saying that they are never uneducated guesses. Aether wasn't just plucked out of thin air (if you'll excuse the pun) it was based on available evidence at the time. IT was Einstein I believe, in his Special Theory of Relativity, who proved that Aether was an incorrect theory. That is the way science works - start off with a hypothesis and go about proving or disproving it. As you pointed out, the distance to the sun is valid, although I wouldn't say it was a guess, but an estimate which is different. One is a stab in the dark and one is an approximation.

pfffft, theres no conclusive evidence that either happened!

heh a whole new can o' worms! I believe that there is life on other planets, and statistically speaking that is a very strong possibility - be it intelligent life or not. I'm completely undecided whether these aliens are little green men that visit earth. I certainly think there is a strong possibility that there is a race/species out there somewhere far more advanced than us, but whether they have discovvered our little corner of the galaxy yet is another thing altogether.

Who builds and programs these computers that compile an output? It wouldn't happen to be humans would it?
