*Edit* - OFFICIAL TRAILER RELEASED!!

Just to clear some things up;

First of all...

NO not Dragon Ball Z:

just Dragon Ball (the series before Z)

No, not that kind of Dragon Ball either...

but rather, DRAGONBALL

How did this happen?
20th Century Fox went to Japan to buy the rights for a Dragonball movie in 2002. Since then, very little progress was done on the movie until recently. Regardless, fans were very excited and fake posters and manips began to appear soon after the movie rights were acquired. In 2004, Fox hired Ben Ramsey (The Big Hit) to write the screenplay. After many reports on the movie being cancelled, finally in 2007 we were given some credible information.

Canada.com reported that 20th Century Fox had planned on filming the Dragonball movie in Montreal via green screen, much like the movie “300.” Soon after, 20th Century Fox issued a press release, confirming the director, producer, and stunt company.

Press Release: 20th Century Fox Films

quote:
The manga, novels and series bring to the film a rich mythology and exciting, complex characters – all of which have captivated millions of fans, of all ages, around the globe. One of the greatest manga franchises ever created, DRAGONBALL has an enormous online fanbase and is consistently one of the most frequently searched-for terms on Google and Yahoo! DRAGONBALL has exploded into a global phenomenon that has generated more than four billion dollars in merchandising sales. It is considered the gold standard of anime-based video games, with more than 25 different games and over ten million units sold since May 2002. The series – 500 episodes strong – posted top ratings in Europe, Asia and the U.S.

Rising star Justin Chatwin, who portrayed Tom Cruise’s son in Steven Spielberg’s WAR OF THE WORLDS, takes on the lead role of the heroic Goku, a powerful warrior who protects the Earth from an endless stream of rogues bent on dominating the Universe and controlling the mystical objects from which the film takes its name.

Chatwin has already begun a rigorous training regimen under the auspices of the premier stunt performance company, 87Eleven, which has executed or designed some of the biggest action pieces ever seen on film, in pictures such as THE MATRIX, THE BOURNE SUPREMACY, MR. & MRS. SMITH, and 300.

The press release confirmed James Wong was hired to direct, Stephen Chow was hired to produce, and 87Eleven was hired to do the stunts. The reports on filming in Montreal were false, however, and filming was actually done in Durango, Mexico. The film has recently wrapped filming and is now in post production.

James Wong rewrote the previous draft by Ben Ramsey, with help from Stephen Chow who has given James advice and guidance on the script.

The film is currently scheduled for an April 10th, 2009 release in North America and a March 2009 release in Japan. The movie has a budget of around $100 million dollars, and the movie’s runtime is estimated to be about 100 minutes.

There has been alot of talking recently about the Dragon Ball movie, and with the filming of it already completed (besides the planned re-filming started on October 30th) and now in post-production, there has been alot of info leaked from the cast and crew, even a leaked trailer/teaser.

The official trailer has not yet been released since most of the movie is being done in post-production (ie. computer graphics, visual and audio). The trailer was at first rumored to premiere with Max Payne, another 20th Century Fox film, but was evidently not the case. As it turns out, the trailer that was leaked was not ever meant to be shown to the public, and Fox was working on a different one that was scheduled to premiere with Max Payne. But, because the film’s special effects are still not completed, it has been delayed until later this year.

Here is an official quote from Fox:
quote:
...the pieces of content that are being leaked were not created to be used this way. They were only meant to be shown to potential Licensing & Merchandising partners who need to make partnering decisions far in advance of release date, and the content has not been approved for online use. Elements like music clearances and even talent approvals have not been pursued because we had no intention of having this go online. Alot goes into a trailer or video being authorized for online use…

We had hoped to have a really kick-ass trailer done by MAX PAYNE’s in-theater date, but because alot of effects shots are still being worked on - we’ve decided to wait until there is more material to work with, so we can really “wow” you and the fans. This is not uncommon for a film that still has 6 months until it goes in theaters. It looks like the real trailer will be released a little later in the year...

Here is the leaked PRE-post-production trailer:

Because of this, talk of Dragonball by fans has mostly been negative, seeing the movie only for what THAT trailer had to offer.

Promotion for Dragonball has been scarce so far, but luckily, according to Fox, promotion should start to take off soon. Thanks to DBLegends for the interview.

1. When will promotion for the film Dragonball officially begin and what can we expect?
Promotion will truly begin when we launch the official trailer. Expect to see plenty of TV spots and action closer to the release. This is typical with any campaign. The fans will really feel the promotion of the movie to begin by the end of the year and will be promoted at many targeted events in 2009.

2. A Junior Novel and Video Game have been confirmed. Any other possible merchandise? Maybe a TV spin off or new comic series?
Currently could not be answered, hopefully they will get back to me on this.

3. There has been a rumor going around that the sequel to this film will begin filming in the first quarter of 2009. Any truth to this?
There is no news on a sequel just yet. We tend to wait out and see how the initial film does and if sequels can be financed.

4. How reliant is this film on visual effects? Is the majority of the money going towards CGI (such as cities, fight scenes, etc.)?
There will be a lot of amazing effects and yes.

5. How would you compare the official trailer that releases later this year to the teaser that was shown during the licensing expo?
I am told the trailer will be different. That piece didn’t portray enough energy, so it wasn’t really reflective of the full feature. It was intended to show the look of some elements for L&M purposes, and to introduce some characters to those people. The L&M piece didn’t showcase the hard-core action that the film will offer, but the trailer will.

Latest word from Fox is that their new target date for the theatrical trailer is December 12th, 2008. The Day The Earth Stood Still premieres on December 12th from 20th Century Fox, so we are assuming the trailer will be attached with it (although that isn’t confirmed).

Cast of Dragonball
Goku (Justin Chatwin)
Bulma (Emmy Rossum)
Yamcha (Joon Park)
Master Roshi (Chow Yun-Fat)
Lord Piccolo (James Marsters)
Mai (Eriko Tamura)
Chi-Chi (Jamie Chung)
Grandpa Gohan (Randall Duk Kim)

James Wong is directing the live-action adaptation of Dragonball, as well as writing the screenplay. Although Ben Ramsey originally wrote the screenplay based on a different part of the Dragonball mythology, James has rewritten it to be focused around Lord Piccolo

James Wong directed the first and third installments of the “Final Destination” series (which were quite successful in the box office), “The One” (starring Jet Li), and one episode of “The X-Files.” Wong also produced and wrote many episodes of “The X-Files,” “Millenium,” and the critically acclaimed movie, “Willard.” James was nominated for 3 Primetime Emmys including “Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.” He is 49 years old, born in Hong Kong, and currently lives in America.

Stephen Chow, who is producing, is a critically acclaimed actor and director, who has given us some of the most creative kung fu movies of all time: “Kung Fu Hustle” and “Shaolin Soccer.”

Jackson Spidell will be the stunt double for Goku:

and the stunts crew 87Eleven has worked on “The Matrix,” “300”, “The Bourne Ultimatum,” “Rambo,” “Fight Club,” and “V for Vendetta.”

Visual Effects Crew (ie. post production)
Zoic Studios (Spider-Man 2, The Day After Tomorrow).
Hybride (300, Sin City, and more)
Cafe FX (X-Men: The Last Stand and 300)

So i think it's safe to say Dragonball will have a visual feel similar to Sin City, 300, and Max Payne.

I think it's better doing the original story that started it off as a movie first instead of jumping in straight to DBZ chronologically. What made DB and DBZ great was all the character development (oh and fight scenes). All the characters of DBZ were introduced individually, all of them had their own unique personalities that we all grew to know as the story progressed. Adapting that for a movie platform would only make us like the characters even more, meaning a DBZ movie sequel to this one will be even more sweeter.

Amen to that.

I haven't actually watched Dragonball, only a few bits now and then. It'd be awesome if it was Z or GT.

I reckon it would be A LOT better if japan made the movie. For example the live action for Death Note was pretty good, but then again..hollywood n all lol

I dont think this is gonna be good imo.

Wait for the official trailer before anyone makes any reservations if its gonna be good or not imo, we still have no idea how the actual movie is going to look. Most of the movie is still being done in post-production (computer graphics, etc.) and this "very" early trailer posted here has none of the post-production work done to it.

And the story will follow the original manga, this movie will revolve around Prince Piccolo which is the first saga, branching from the Pilaf saga in which Pilaf tries to resurrect Piccolo.

Kinda bugs me they hire a Chinese man to do Master Roshi and it looks like the only Japanese name in the cast is for Mai.

Movie making in the last few years has become so much more amazing, it's almost like a formula they just discovered. These epic type movies with rich computer graphic environments are unreal. A Dragonball movie has sooooo many expectations they need and MUST live up to so I can really hope they take their time and make this live up to what the Dragonball fans hope for. Plus if this does well in the box office we can look forward to more sequels :)

well it's kinda funny since a dragonball movie had already been made by some no name compay back in 2001. It was horrible if you were watching it to see if it would build on the existing story line.

however if you watched it as if it were a parody then it was freakin hilarious. I think thats what your going to have to do with this movie as well to be able to watch it with out shooting yourself is wait and rent it and watch it as a type of parody or low budget fan made movie, which it really seems like one. Look at piccolo in the trailer i saw he was white and no antennas on his head ......WTF?! did they even watch DB or DBZ?! so like yeah im going to watch it as a parody. =P
